Jacks or Better is the most popular form of video poker in the world — and for good reason. It's simple enough for beginners to pick up in minutes, yet deep enough that experienced players can apply real strategy to push the house edge down to almost nothing. At phaaa Casino, it's one of the most-played games among Filipino members from Manila to Cebu to Davao.
The game is based on five-card draw poker. You're dealt five cards, you choose which ones to keep (hold), and the discarded cards are replaced with new ones from the same virtual deck. If your final hand contains a pair of Jacks or better — hence the name — you win a payout. The stronger your hand, the bigger the reward.
Unlike slots where every spin is purely random, Jacks or Better rewards players who study the optimal hold strategy. With perfect play on a full-pay machine, the theoretical return to player (RTP) reaches 99.54% — one of the best odds you'll find at any online casino in the Philippines. That's why phaaa features it prominently in our game library.

Not all Jacks or Better tables are equal — here's how the payout schedules compare
The numbers before the slash refer to the Full House payout; the number after refers to the Flush payout. Always look for 9/6 tables — that's what phaaa offers by default.
The difference between table variants is bigger than it looks
On a 9/6 full-pay machine, a Full House pays 9 coins per coin bet and a Flush pays 6 coins. These two hands come up frequently enough that the difference between a 9/6 and a 6/5 table adds up fast over a session.
Say you're playing ₱10 per hand for 200 hands in an evening — a realistic session for a casual player in Manila or Cebu. On a 9/6 table, your expected loss is roughly ₱92. On a 6/5 table, that climbs to over ₱500. That's a significant difference just from choosing the right table.
At phaaa Casino, we default to the full-pay 9/6 schedule because we believe Filipino players deserve the best odds available. It's part of our commitment to fair, transparent gaming under PAGCOR-compliant standards.
Always verify the pay table before playing. At phaaa, the table is displayed clearly before every game session.
Follow this priority order to play near-perfect Jacks or Better at phaaa
If you already have a Royal Flush, Straight Flush, Four of a Kind, Full House, Flush, or Straight — hold all five cards. Never break a complete winning hand chasing something higher.
Keep your three matching cards and discard the other two. You have a strong chance of improving to a Full House or Four of a Kind.
If four of your cards can form a Royal Flush, hold them even if it means breaking a made Flush or Straight. The 800:1 payout justifies the risk.
Keep both pairs and discard the fifth card. You're drawing for a Full House — one of the best-paying hands on the 9/6 table.
A pair of Jacks or better already pays 1:1. Hold it and draw three new cards hoping to improve to Three of a Kind or better.
Hold four cards of the same suit in sequence. Discard the fifth and draw for the Straight Flush. Even completing a regular Flush or Straight is a solid consolation.
A pair of 2s through 10s is statistically better to hold than two unsuited high cards. The pair gives you more paths to improvement.
If you have three cards toward a Royal Flush and nothing else worth holding, keep those three and draw two. Long shot, but the payout makes it mathematically correct.
If your hand has no pairs, no draws, and no suited connectors — hold any Jack, Queen, King, or Ace. Discard the rest and hope for a pair on the draw.
Pro Tip: The single biggest mistake beginners make is breaking a made hand to chase a Royal Flush with only three cards. Unless you have four to a Royal, never break a Flush, Straight, Full House, or better. Discipline is what separates winning players from losing ones at phaaa.
